Why is this important?
Understanding the different categories of additional hours is essential to managing your working hours and payroll. It ensures that you comply with the law and are fairly compensated for every hour worked.
What types of additional hours are there?
1. Overtime
For part-time employees, overtime is time worked in excess of the hours stipulated in the contract. They may not exceed one-third of the contractual working hours, and must never exceed the legal working week of 35 hours.
2. Structural additional hours
These are hours worked by employees whose contract stipulates a working time in excess of 35 hours (e.g. 39 hours). The employee will therefore benefit fromadditional hours automatically increased at the rate of the increments in his or her collective agreement.
3. Exceptional additional hours
Unforeseen overtime is often paid at a higher rate, as defined by collective agreement.
