How to set the time clock rules?

This article explains how to set up the time clock once the application has been installed on your tablet Available only on desktop

Why is this important?

Setting up time clock rules is essential to ensure accurate tracking of working hours and simplify attendance management. This ensures correct remuneration based on hours worked, and helps prevent disputes over late arrivals or early departures.

You can access the time clock settings from the online area: Establishment settings > Time clock rules.


How do I configure time clock rules?

Time clock general settings

Paid hours update rules: Define how the "paid shifts" column is automatically filled in when you validate timekeeping days.

⚠️ Important:

  • Your employees' timekeeping hours are never directly modified; only the hours you want to retain for schedule updates and payroll submission are affected by these changes.

  • Before applying these rules, make sure your employees are informed in writing to protect yourself against any claims.

Arrival and departure rules: Choose between retaining the scheduled time, the clocked time, or the scheduled time with tolerance (10-15 min depending on your policy).

Example: if an employee was supposed to arrive at 9:00 AM but arrives at 9:07 AM, you can retain 9:00 AM (scheduled time), 9:07 AM (clocked time), or 9:00 AM (if your tolerance is 10 min).

💡 Key points:

  • Tolerance is capped at 119 minutes maximum. Beyond that, a second line corresponding to a new shift is created.

  • The time threshold is inclusive: an employee who clocks in at 9:10 AM for a shift scheduled at 9:00 AM is considered on time (with 10 min tolerance).

  • No tolerance for early arrivals (only scheduled time or clocked time).

  • No scheduled shift: the paid time is always the clocked time.

Automatic rounding (optional): Round clocked times to 5, 10, or 15 minutes to simplify payroll calculations. Rounding only applies to shift start/end times and only when you choose to retain the clocked time.

Fetch punches: choose where punches are saved (employee's main establishment or the establishment where he/she has punched in).
The arrival and departure of a shift must be punched in the same establishment, on the same tablet.


To enable employees to punch in at a secondary establishment, this option must be activated in the organization's general settings: Establishment settings > General settings > Employees can punch in off-site (at the bottom of the page).

Punch frequency: Determine whether employees should punch in at the beginning/end of each shift, or once per shift series.


Tablet settings

  1. Late notifications: Receive an SMS if an employee is late. Requirements:

    • Tablet synchronized or mobile app version updated.

    • Manager's phone number entered.

    • Option reserved for standard or advanced schedulers.

  2. Authorize breaks: Allow employees to punch in breaks scheduled on their shift.
    Breaks are not considered as breaks: they must be badges as shift arrivals and departures.
    If disabled, if the employee punches out to go on break, his or her punch will be considered as the end of shift. He/she will not be able to punch in a break return.

  3. Signatures and photos: Choose between the employee's signature or photo when banging.
    The French Data Protection Authority (CNIL) considers systematic photo-taking on time and attendance systems to be excessive data collection. This option must be agreed with employees.

  4. Activate the option to clock in/out from all tablets within the same location:

    This option allows your employees to clock in, start and end their breaks, and clock out from any tablet within the same establishment — without needing to return to the initial device.

    ⚠️ Before activating this option, make sure that:

    • You have a stable internet connection. Employees won’t be able to clock in/out if there’s no internet, and they’ll receive an error message.

    • All tablets are linked to the same Skello establishment. If your tablets belong to different locations, synchronization won’t work.

    In the Employees > Personal Information tab:

    • The “Display on schedule” option is enabled for each employee.

    • Employees who need to clock in are properly linked to this establishment (either as their main or secondary location).

    • The app is updated to the latest version on the Play Store or App Store.


Time clock on mobile application

When the Mobile Time Clock option is activated in the establishment, a final category of settings can be accessed from the time clock rules to activate the mobile time clock.
